Fox at Hardings Beach

This hill is actually one large sand dune and is situated behind the main strip of sand at Hardings Beach. At dusk the foxes tend to come out and trot along the beach for their free meals, mostly shellfish and possibly crabs.

Zad Crol - Chatham Grave Stone

Zad Crol
Originally uploaded by Chris Seufert.
This is one of the earlier gravestones in the oldest cemetery in Chatham, MA. It has a very large population of smallpox victims. Most of the town then were relatively poor famers (rather than fishermen) and it was common in the 17th and 18th century to use unmarked field stones and even wooden posts, which are now gone. The lack of a date probably puts it into this early period. This probably dates to the mid to late 1700's and is a poor spelling of the common local name "Crowell."

Old Harbor Station

Hi,

In the mid 1950s, when I was about nine years old, my family was invited by a business friend of my father’s to stay at his house off the Chatham mainland. The man’s name was either Howard or Harold Rose. He was an engineer, as was my father. The home he owned was an old coast guard station and there were also several outbuildings on the property. We stayed in one of these. We parked in Chatham and a man who worked for him, named Nate, picked us up by boat. We stayed for a week. On one side was the Atlantic. My family has vacationed many times on the Cape since then and we have tried to locate where I stayed as a child, but without success. We will be on Cape Cod next weekend with friends. Is there any chance you could direct us to where I might have stayed so long ago? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

6:39pm- Lobsters at Chatham Fish Pier

This gillnetter brought in a nice tote of lobsters in addition to the traditional cod, haddock, and monkfish. Within hours these lobsters will go from the bottom of the ocean to the top of a plate. The one on top would make a nice end of summer feast.

Surf Tags

Hi,

Recently I found some "surf tags" labeled "surfman 1-25" or something they are in a foot locker of sorts. They were in possession of my grandfather, who collected nautical artifacts and spent his childhood in wellfleet, hanging out with the u.s.l.s.s. at cahoon hollow. If you could shed any light on the significance of these tags, and the locker they occupy, please e mail me back.

P.S.
I would be able to get you some pictures if you need
them.

H. Brett Painting

Hi,

I have been trying to find the novel that illustrates a painting that I have. The painting (original oil) by h. brett is titled CAPE COD dated 12-26-27. I know this painting was depicted in one of lincoln's books, but I don't know which one. The beach is crowded with people looking out to sea fearing for boats that are in danger of rough waters. In the forground is a young mother cluching her young son worried about someone on one of the boats. Other people (fishermem) are pointing helplessly out towards the troubled boats. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreaciated.

Condition of Ridgevale Beach

I am writing about the condition of Ridgevale beach this summer. I met a woman leaving the beach with her 2 children in tow and greatly annoyed that she had to leave after paying $15 to park at the beach. She found the beach very dirty and the children unable to wade in the water because that area was closed. One side of the beach is closed because of bacteria and the other side is heavy with seaweed. The seaweed also draws the fillies and makes it undesirable to swim. It has continued this way all summer. I think it is unfair of the town to collect this fee when conditions are so bad.

Have you had comments regarding this problem? Do you know if anything think is being done regarding this beach? Hardings Beach does not seem to have the seaweed problem.

9:17pm - Chatham Fish Pier, Massachusetts

It's bright for this time of day isn't it? The sturgeon moon this week made everything here on the Cape look a little brighter and sharper when the sun went down. My shots of the moon itself didn't come out very well (I'll have to work on that a bit) but the dusk shots did. The fishing industry here in Chatham is still vibrant and profitable, despite the trend toward factory ships happening in the rest of the world. Provincetown and Chatham still have day boats making 12 hour to 3 day runs off the coast and our closeness to the fishing areas allows the boats to save on gas also. Longlining, gillnetting, weir fishing, shellfishing, lobstering, and trawling are all part of the approach and some go between the various fisheries, depending on the stocks. How long this will continue is anyone's guess.

Harwich, Cape Cod History

Hi,

I was amongst the volunteers to recently install the trail and parking area
at the Monomoy River woodlands area, and one day while we were working out
there a gentleman hiker mentioned something of the history of the property:
pointing out a rusted shell of a car just off the trail he insisted that it
was a remnant from an old road and taxi route that used to run, and that
"sometimes when the taxis broke down they would just abandon them by the
side of the road." I was wondering if this were true, and if so whether or
not you have any more information on the subject (or at least know of a
source who might) as your website is the closest thing to an answer my
Google searches have come up with thus far. Thank you and have a nice day.

Lost Camera at Lighthouse Beach

Hi There:

We were just there yesterday at the beach (We were at the beach by the lighthouse in front of the Jetty and parked at the visitor's 30 minutes parking lot, across the street from the light house.) and lost our camera which have a lot of our precious pictures in it. It is a digital camera, silver, Canon, and have picture of an Asian family, two children, a boy and a girl, two older people in their early sixties, and two adults in their forties.

If anyone turn it in, I would appreciate that we will be contacted. My name is Theresa, (858) 345-0966. If you have any info on any other sources that we can contact, we would really appreciate it. Thank you so much for your help.

Theresa Nguyen-Muth
TNMUTH@cox.net

PS- Our family have combed the area where we were at and I am very sure that it is not there anymore. I know someone has probably picked it up. I am just hoping that at least the pictures can be returned. We were right across the lighthouse, there were some steps that goes down to the beach and we were around the right area of the the beach. Noone was around that area except for two men who were fishing. It was within minutes of when we left and I discovered the camera missing. When I returned, it was gone.

Once again, thank you so much for your help.

4 Wheel Drive Permit

My wife and I are traveling from PA to Cape Cod in June for a long weekend of relaxation and fishing. I will have a 4x4 vehicle and was wondering how to purchase a permit (and how much does it cost) to allow us to drive on the access road from the Harding's Beach parking lot out to the Lighthouse to fish in the inlet at night. My brothers and I have walked the road many times and noticed that other people have driven out to park and fish... I'd rather not have to make that walk with my wife and all of our fishing equipment (LOL).

Please advise.

Thanks in advance,

The Christopher Ryder House

Hi,

I am looking for information on the Christopher Ryder House.

My parents honeymooned in Chatham 36 years ago and have not stopped talking about this restaurant. I realize it may not be there anymore, but I really wanted to give them a little piece of memorabilia for this year’s anniversary. I am getting married in July (same month as their anniversary), and wanted it to be a “before I go on my honeymoon, here is something to remember yours” type of gift.

Is there any information someone can send me on post cards, pictures, write ups, etc. on this restaurant?

Anything would be helpful!
Thank you in advance.

The History of Kate Gould Park

Hi All,

When entering the name of my girlfriend for a random search on Google, it brought up a very interesting namesake. My girlfriend's name is Kate Gould and of course, she shares her name with the park in the centre of the town of Chatham, Massachusetts.

I'm very interested to find out the origins of the Kate Gould which the park was named after. Are you able to inform me or could you point me to someone who might?

We'd very much like to visit the town one day and set foot in the park. Therefore, could you also suggest what time of year would be the best to visit and how we'd get there bearing in mind we'd be most probably flying into Boston?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Many thanks
