Zad Crol - Chatham Grave Stone

Zad Crol
Originally uploaded by Chris Seufert.
This is one of the earlier gravestones in the oldest cemetery in Chatham, MA. It has a very large population of smallpox victims. Most of the town then were relatively poor famers (rather than fishermen) and it was common in the 17th and 18th century to use unmarked field stones and even wooden posts, which are now gone. The lack of a date probably puts it into this early period. This probably dates to the mid to late 1700's and is a poor spelling of the common local name "Crowell."

Old Harbor Station

Hi,

In the mid 1950s, when I was about nine years old, my family was invited by a business friend of my father’s to stay at his house off the Chatham mainland. The man’s name was either Howard or Harold Rose. He was an engineer, as was my father. The home he owned was an old coast guard station and there were also several outbuildings on the property. We stayed in one of these. We parked in Chatham and a man who worked for him, named Nate, picked us up by boat. We stayed for a week. On one side was the Atlantic. My family has vacationed many times on the Cape since then and we have tried to locate where I stayed as a child, but without success. We will be on Cape Cod next weekend with friends. Is there any chance you could direct us to where I might have stayed so long ago? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

6:39pm- Lobsters at Chatham Fish Pier

This gillnetter brought in a nice tote of lobsters in addition to the traditional cod, haddock, and monkfish. Within hours these lobsters will go from the bottom of the ocean to the top of a plate. The one on top would make a nice end of summer feast.

Surf Tags

Hi,

Recently I found some "surf tags" labeled "surfman 1-25" or something they are in a foot locker of sorts. They were in possession of my grandfather, who collected nautical artifacts and spent his childhood in wellfleet, hanging out with the u.s.l.s.s. at cahoon hollow. If you could shed any light on the significance of these tags, and the locker they occupy, please e mail me back.

P.S.
I would be able to get you some pictures if you need
them.

thanks -andrew-

Bristol Branting Club

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the Bristol Branting Club. I have a copy of their By-laws from June 9th, 1888, and a certificate of membership to it. I know hunting is not allowed, and hasn't been for a long time, but I was hoping you might know of some of the history of this club,

regards,
